September Chamber Spotlight—Creek Retreat Passage

Tucked among the rolling hills and groves of trees in rural Nebraska is a peaceful country retreat offering visitors a chance to slow down, reconnect and enjoy the beauty of the countryside. That beautiful property is Creek Retreat Passage, owned and operated by Nicole and Dean Lech.

The property’s transformation into a welcoming vacation home has been a true labor of love. The journey began in 2016, when the current owners started helping longtime owner Rosemary Nelson with everyday tasks, including mowing the yard, cutting trees, clearing the driveway and helping care for the animals on the property.

When Nelson’s health later required her to move to town, she offered the property to Dean and Nicole Lech again. A purchase agreement was signed in October 2021, and what followed was a massive cleanup and renovation project.

Creek Retreat Passage once included 12 or 13 deteriorating outbuildings, extensive fencing and years of accumulated belongings. It had also been home to an assortment of animals, including emus, potbellied pigs, miniature cows, miniature ponies and chickens. Once they started inside the home, the owners discovered even more work was needed. The renovation included new windows, exterior siding, a new roof, rebuilt basement walls, new electrical and plumbing, updated flooring and a remodeled kitchen.

The project even survived an unexpected setback when a major windstorm in June 2025 destroyed a shop on the property and sent a 2×4 through the roof of the house.

Today, that hard work has created a spacious and comfortable vacation home perfect for families, groups and outdoor enthusiasts. Located near Calamus Reservoir, the property is within easy driving distance of Sherman Reservoir, Davis Creek and Nebraska’s Big Rodeo. Guests can enjoy a private backyard with a patio, electric grill, outdoor seating, mini golf and a playground, along with plenty of parking.

While the amenities are certainly a draw, the property’s greatest asset may be its peace and serenity. Surrounded by hills, trees and expansive views, it offers a quiet escape from the pace of everyday life. The back deck provides a spectacular view of the countryside, where guests can enjoy wildlife, changing skies and the simple beauty of rural Nebraska.

During the Chamber’s ribbon cutting visit, a rainstorm had just passed through, leaving sunlight shining across the hills beneath dark, retreating clouds. The scene perfectly captured what makes the property special—quiet, natural beauty and a sense of getting away from it all.

Guests have taken notice as well, giving the property five-star reviews and highlighting its cleanliness, comfortable beds, spacious layout and peaceful setting. Nicole, the property’s Airbnb Superhost, is committed to providing guests with a welcoming and enjoyable stay.

What began with helping a neighbor eventually became a years-long project to restore a piece of rural Nebraska and give it a new purpose. Today, the Creek Retreat Passage provides visitors with a comfortable place to gather, relax and experience the beauty and tranquility of the Nebraska countryside.

Whether you’re looking for a comfortable home base during hunting season, a spacious gathering place for a family reunion or wedding, or simply a peaceful getaway with family, this rural retreat offers a beautiful place to make memories. Creak Retreat Passage is available to book through Airbnb or VRBO, where guests can view photos, amenities, availability and reviews. Start planning your next Nebraska getaway!
