Nestled in the heart of downtown Ord, Nebraska, The Golden Husk Theatre is more than just a performance venue—it’s a historic landmark and a vibrant cultural hub. Owned and operated by Valley Performing Arts Theatre, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, The Golden Husk has been inspiring the arts community since VPAT acquired it on July 1, 2015.
Constructed in 1928, the theatre is renowned for its stunning acoustical walls made from corn husks, a unique feature that gives the venue both its name and its signature sound. Since its acquisition, VPAT has transformed The Golden Husk into a dynamic space for theatrical productions, artistic workshops, youth and adult education, nonprofit meetings, and regional conferences. Guided by a mission to cultivate a creative community and enrich lives through the arts, the theatre continues to honor its storied past while shaping a vibrant future for Valley County and beyond.
The Golden Husk’s growth has been remarkable. Its inaugural event, Valley County’s Got Talent, celebrated local artistry and set the stage for what has become a rich calendar of performances and community gatherings. Today, the theatre hosts an annual season featuring a mix of nationally recognized performers and local talent, alongside festivals, workshops, and community theatre productions—now proudly producing two full-scale productions each season. Looking ahead, The Golden Husk aims to expand its role as a rural Nebraska hub for creativity, offering diverse experiences ranging from concerts in all musical genres to dance lessons, opera, comedy, and more.
As a nonprofit, volunteer-driven theatre supported by two part-time staff, The Golden Husk invites community involvement at every level. Volunteers help with event setup, concessions, ushering, marketing, and facility maintenance, while sponsorship opportunities enable individuals and businesses to support performances and programming. The theatre truly belongs to the community—a place where everyone can gather, create, and connect.
Supporting local arts and businesses is central to The Golden Husk’s philosophy. The Board of Directors emphasizes the importance of community partnerships, working hand-in-hand with local leaders to strengthen the region, celebrate cultural heritage, attract visitors, and create a thriving environment where everyone can contribute their unique gifts.
