The landscape and infrastructure of our Central Nebraska area has certainly evolved over time just like Jeffres Sand & Gravel has, the locally owned company based in Burwell, Nebraska that has played a part in many of those changes to our local landscape – everything from supplying landscape rock for residential or commercial spaces to building roads to help develop our area’s transportation infrastructure.
The products and services the Jeffres family offers has been evolving ever since the Spring of 1971 when Lee Jeffres started a trucking company while hauling gravel for Malicky Sand & Gravel. Lee then purchased his first gravel pump in 1975 and began pumping gravel on property owned by his parents which led to the beginning of Jeffres Sand & Gravel.
Once Jeffres Sand & Gravel and Jeffres Trucking was well established, Jeffres Excavating was added as the demand increased for dirt work and road and dam building in our area.
Loup Valley Redi-Mix, based in Ord, then became a part of the company’s mix in 2015. In 2018, additional land was purchased which will soon be the new home of the plant in order to continue improving the businesses.
The Jeffres family believes that high quality products and superior customer service is what builds lasting business relationships. Their employees that possess decades of industry experience are also part of what keeps their customers coming back for nearly 50 years.
With all four companies, they are one of the largest employers in the area and are currently in a season of growth with openings for a Dredge Operator, Heavy Equipment Operator and Loader Operator/Screening Plant Operator. They offer valuable benefits for their team members and employees say one of the best benefits takes place during the winter months when Lee Jeffres cooks lunch almost every day for the employees. They believe offering exceptional employment opportunities gives people a chance to create a better life for their families or to escape the rat race of the larger cities.
The Jeffres family takes pride in the area they choose to do business in and they value the support of their customers. They share, “Without the support of local residents, we would not be in business. That’s why it is very important for us to give back to the communities that have given to us.”
Their companies generously support the Chambers of Commerce in Ord and Burwell as well as the Valley County Community Foundation Fund and Calamus Area Community Fund along with a host of community events such as Burwell’s Easter Egg Hunt and area schools and 4-H programs in four counties.
“Buying locally means that when you walk through the door of any local business, more than likely you will be greeted by your first name. You know that every dollar you spend is going towards building a better community and employing family, friends and neighbors. It is emotionally rooted!”
The Jeffres companies have created incredible examples of business growth and diversification as they continue to serve general contractors, sub-contractors, government entities, home owners and industry professionals plus they have an exciting new venture they will be announcing soon!
